These are good times for online payment platform Stripe, one of the world’s most valuable startups.
Stripe handles payment processing for online storefronts and apps. Since brothers John and Patrick Collison founded the software-as-a-service outfit in 2010, it’s ridden an ecommerce tidal wave to become one of the world’s most valuable startups. Earlier this year it raised $600 million in funding off a $36 billion valuation.
CEO Patrick Collison told Business Insider the funding was meant to be a bulwark against the economic turmoil of COVID-19, while also saying the company had over $2 billion on its balance sheet.
“We think the dislocation could be here for a while,” Collison told Business Insider’s Matt Weinberger. “It’s not clear what the rest of 2020 looks like. It’s not clear what the rest of 2021 looks like.”
The company is now making moves to bring in larger clients. The company said last week it would partner with Salesforce to tackle big corporate customers.
“We are operating at a very large scale now, where we are serving merchants at every end of the spectrum,” Collison told David Jeans at Forbes. “As you reach scale, you have to meet the customers where they are.”
The company told Business Insider at the time of its last funding round that it planned to continue hiring as it expanded into several new countries.
So how much can you make working for Stripe? Depending what you do, it could be a lot.
We can gain insight by looking at how much Stripe pays the workers it hires from outside the US. Corporations have to disclose to the federal government how much they pay employees through the H-1B visa program, which is a major part of Silicon Valley’s workforce. The Office of Foreign Labor Certification makes that information public annually.
Business Insider went through information released in 2020, which included jobs hired for up to the last six years, to discover how much Stripe pays software engineers, financial accountants, and other roles. These positions were almost entirely based in Washington State and California, with a single position for a Backend/API engineer in New York.
This is annual salary information only, and does not include other compensation such as stock or bonuses. Though it’s not a complete picture, the information still represents a rare window into how much the company pays its employees.
Stripe paid an engineering manager in California $268,800
Stripe is a software company, and that shows in its hires. Most of the hires in the data surveyed by Business Insider were for some category of engineer. The company hired a dozen “software engineers” on H-1B work visas, making it the most common job on this list.

Stripe has global ambitions, and that was reflected in positions like “technical account manager,” a position that works to “support Stripe’s largest and most complex users” and “foster long term user relationships that grow loyalty to Stripe and Stripe products,” according to a job posting.
